Recognition of Legacy: School Leader from Rochdale Honored at RYA Awards
In Rochdale, Greenbank Primary School has been at the forefront of outdoor education, thanks to the visionary leadership of Sandra Hartley. For almost two decades, Hartley has been shaping the school's approach to outdoor learning and sailing education, leaving behind a sustainable and impactful program.
Every year, every Year 3 pupil at Greenbank Primary School receives an introductory sailing session, a testament to Hartley's commitment to making outdoor education accessible for all. The school's partnership with Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club has been instrumental in providing valuable sailing experiences and resources, enhancing practical learning and engagement with outdoor sports.
Under Hartley's leadership, Greenbank Primary School has offered over 120,000 participation days of learning outside of the classroom, fostering a connection with outdoor activities and sailing among its students. The school's commitment to experiential learning has resulted in 7,000 days of residential experiences and 1,450 adventurous experiences for its pupils.
Hartley's dedication to outdoor education has not gone unnoticed. She has received the RYA Impact Award, celebrating her extraordinary contribution to the sport and education. The RYA Impact Award is given to unsung heroes in sailing and boating, recognising their significant impact on the lives of others.
Sandra Hartley's vision has extended beyond the classroom, creating a lasting legacy at Greenbank Primary School. The outdoor education program includes sailing at Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club as a core activity, with the school owning a fleet of Optimists and being a group member of the club. This partnership has allowed 12 students at a time to progress from complete beginners to achieving their RYA Stage 3.
As Hartley prepares to retire from her role at Greenbank Primary School, her contributions to the school and the wider community will continue to be felt. Her transformative outdoor education program has helped generations of children grow in confidence, resilience, and joy, enriching their experiences and shaping their futures.
