Republican Party Choose Contender for Assembly Special Election in Northern Region
In the upcoming special election on November 4, the 115th Assembly District is set to witness a fierce contest between Brent Davison and Michael Cashman. The district, traditionally a Republican stronghold, is expected to see a change in its representation following the departure of former Assembly Member Billy Jones earlier this year.
Republicans, with ambitions to flip seats like the 19th Congressional District and strengthen their presence in the lower Hudson Valley and on Long Island, view this election as an opportunity to make inroads. State GOP Chair Ed Cox has expressed optimism, referring to a potential Republican win in the 115th Assembly District as a 'very good victory' and a promising start for future elections.
Brent Davison, the Republican nominee, has announced his intentions to criticise Cashman's candidacy, labelling it as more of the same, and tying him to current state leadership, citing issues such as crime and affordability. Davison, chosen over Malone Mayor Andrea Dumas, who was favoured by Rep. Elise Stefanik, has stated that he is not concerned about a lack of support from Stefanik's camp.
Stefanik, who was initially nominated by Donald Trump for the position of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, has since endorsed Davison, following his nomination as the Republican candidate. Cashman, the Democratic nominee, has attracted endorsements from both Republicans and Democrats.
While Democrats are expected to retain the seat in the 115th Assembly District, constituents in the district have expressed a desire for change. The one-party rule in Albany, which has persisted for over 15 years, has led to dissatisfaction among many voters.
Cashman, who prefers not to discuss political parties, has remained focused on his campaign, emphasising his commitment to the issues that matter most to the district's residents.
Looking ahead to 2026, Republicans are already positioning themselves to challenge Democrats' control of the governorship. Rep. Elise Stefanik, who is likely to be the Republican gubernatorial nominee in 2026, has stated that the upcoming election cycle is 'crucial' for the Republican party.
Despite the ongoing political battle, it is clear that the residents of the 115th Assembly District are eager for change and eager to see who will represent them in Albany. The election on November 4 will undoubtedly be a significant event in the political landscape of New York.
