"School board in Sun Prairie declares operations reports as non-compliant, prompting a call for repercussions"

The Sun Prairie School District is currently grappling with transparency concerns following the non-compliance vote on the 2024-25 Operational Excellence reports. These reports, which are used to measure the district's operations and community engagement, did not mention the district's challenges within the last academic year, including board member resignations.

Board Member Bryn Horton emphasized the need for improved two-way communication with students, a concern that seems to resonate with parents and community members. Melissa Grayson, another board member, urged the district to acknowledge its shortcomings and mistakes, stating that it's crucial for the district to address these issues openly.

The Operational Excellence reports presented did not include information about the district's challenges. OE 8, which refers to board communication, and OE 9, speaking to public and community engagement, were also absent from the reports.

In an effort to address these concerns, the district has engaged an independent external attorney from Milwaukee to lead an impartial investigation related to information management issues at the school and district levels. The findings will be reported directly to the Board for appropriate follow-up.

The district is also collaborating with law enforcement, enhancing transparency efforts through the Communications Department, and providing support for students and staff, including safety training on boundaries and mandatory reporting. However, due to sensitivity concerns and ongoing investigations, the district has limited public comments to protect victim sensitivity and maintain focus on student support.

Despite these efforts, the demand for transparency remains high within the community. A parent recently expressed concern about the district's lack of community trust during public comment. Media coverage from August 15, 2025, shows public calls to the school board, with parents and community members continuing to press for clearer information and action on safety and transparency issues.

The 2024-25 Operational Excellence reports were marked as not compliant with the district's expectations, and the district faces a tough reality that was addressed by a parent during public comment. The district should work towards addressing these concerns to regain the trust of its community.

As the district moves forward, a new version of the Operational Excellence report will be used for measuring district operations in the future. The final reports under the current model, the 2024-25 OE reports, mark the end of an era, but the road to improved transparency and community trust is just beginning.
