School lacks a physical education facility outright.
The sports hall at the Elisabeth-Selbert-Gymnasium (ESG) in Filderstadt, Germany, remains closed indefinitely due to renovation delays. A leak in the roof, which was first discovered in July 2023, has caused significant damage to the sports floor structure, rendering the facility unusable.
TSV Bernhausen, a local club, has informed its members about the unavailability of the sports hall and is working to organize replacement facilities. Other schools are also affected due to the ongoing construction of the Gotthard-Muelller-Halle.
The damaged part of the roof has been temporarily sealed, but recent rain has further delayed the renovation. The building authority announced the leak during a meeting of the technical committee in summer 2024. Three companies are currently working on the repair of the roof, but their names have not been disclosed.
Approximately 1050 students at ESG are affected by the unavailability of the sports hall. Sports activities are taking place outdoors, provided the weather permits. Only the gym, weight room in the basement, changing rooms, and showers are operational at ESG.
The schools and clubs have coordinated among themselves to accommodate the necessary bookings of the individual sports clubs in other sports halls. They have found "great understanding" among each other in this situation.
The roof at ESG is now scheduled to be completed by the end of September, with the completion of the sports floor currently being clarified for late October. The moisture seeped through the floor sleeves into the sports floor structure, softening and damaging it severely.
Other schools and clubs in the area have been supportive, helping to ease the inconvenience caused by the closure. The renovation of the sports hall at ESG is a setback, but the community spirit remains strong as everyone works together to find solutions.
