Brand New Direction: South Korea's New President Lee Jae Myung Takes Office

South Korea's Leftist Political Figure Lee Jae Myung Assumes Presidency Role

Seoul (dpa) - The left-wing candidate Lee Jae Myung has won South Korea's presidential election, defeating his conservative opponent Kim Moon Soo after an incredibly high voter turnout of 79.4%. With over 99.8% of votes counted, Lee secured 49.4% of the votes compared to Kim's 41.2%.

South Koreans have voiced their desire for change, as Lee comes from the left opposition and aims to move away from the conservative policies of the former president Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon plunged East Asia into a state crisis at the end of 2024, declaring martial law in December, which was later repealed by parliament, and eventually removed from office in early April, currently standing trial for treason. The early re-election of the president, wielding extensive powers as head of government and commander-in-chief, is intended to bring an end to the state crisis of the past months.

Mending Divided South Korea

Winner Lee Jae Myung pledges a fresh start for the nation, promising to repair damaged political institutions and promote social healing. His diplomatic approach focuses on normalizing relations with North Korea and China, economically pushing for a green transition and state investments in AI and future technologies, and championing workers' rights.

Lee's story is one of resilience and determination. Born as the fifth child into a poor family, his exact birthdate is undisclosed due to his father registering him late. Lee toiled in factories as a teenager, suffering injuries, including a permanent wrist disability. Later, as a human rights lawyer, he rose through the political ranks to become the governor of South Korea's Gyeonggi province until 2021.

President-elect Lee Faces Challenges

Despite his popularity, Lee's presidency is not without controversy. He has faced legal troubles, nearly losing his presidential candidacy due to election law violations. Now, as the head of state, Lee is poised to grapple with pressing economic issues and global trade uncertainties, domestic political polarization, and social divisions.

Agenda Breakdown

Lee's administration is expected to prioritize several key areas:

  • Restoration of Democracy: Lee aims to restore faith in democratic institutions and break the cycle of political retribution.
  • Social Healing: He intends to address deep societal divisions and revive confidence in governance, focusing on civil liberties and justice while avoiding unnecessary vendettas.
  • Public Services and Education Reform: Urgent challenges in the education sector, including mass teacher resignations and empty classrooms, will be addressed by Lee's reform efforts.
  • Fiscal Stimulus and Growth: Lee plans to implement a robust fiscal stimulus package to boost economic growth and tackle rising living costs, youth unemployment, and low fertility rates.
  • Emergency Economic Taskforce: To coordinate recovery efforts, an "Emergency Economic Taskforce" is expected to be established.
  • Trade Relations: South Korea's export-dependent economy requires careful management of international trade negotiations to face ongoing challenges from U.S. tariffs and global economic uncertainty.
  • US Alliance: Despite initial skepticism, Lee supports strong U.S.-South Korea military cooperation as a foundation for peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.
  • North Korea: Lee advocates a pragmatic, step-by-step approach to inter-Korean relations, favoring conditional dialogue and incremental denuclearization steps.
  • China Relations: Lee aims to maintain stable, balanced ties with China, reflecting the Democratic Party's tradition of constructive engagement alongside key security alliances with the U.S.
  • Middle-Power Strategy: Embracing a middle-power strategy, Lee intends to leverage South Korea's global networks to enhance its influence without the military capabilities of a great power.
