Tech Employment Guide: Securing a Position at a Tech Innovation Company

The perception of reliability was a significant factor drawing job seekers towards large tech firms before the pandemic. However, if the Covid-19 pandemic showed us anything, it's that these corporations no longer provide the same stability as they once did. Over 150,000 employees faced layoffs at tech companies in 2024, as per Layoffs.fyi. This suggests that tech startups might be safer bets – or at least as risk-free – as big tech companies regarding job security.

Finding employment at a tech startup involves strategies similar to securing a role at bigger tech corporations (which I've covered in detail), but with a clear comprehension of the hiring process, a readiness to take calculated risks, and the ability to distinguish yourself from the crowd.

1. Comprehend the tech startup hiring process.

Networking is essential in most job search strategies, but it's more crucial when focusing on roles at tech startups. This is because the hiring process at these firms tends to be less formal and structured, and hiring managers might be more involved in selecting candidates. The decision-making process sometimes involves a single individual or a small group.

This means you should leverage your network and expand it when opportunities arise to increase your chances of securing a job in tech.

Online job applications are convenient, but they can also lead to applying for numerous jobs hastily with minimal effort. With technology advancing and the job market being saturated, it's imperative that you find ways to stand out from competing candidates or risk blending into the crowd.

Consider differentiating yourself from other applicants by intentionally stepping out of your comfort zone during your job search. For instance, reaching out to a college classmate employed at your desired company or attending an industry event could be options for introverts like myself. Utilizing social media platforms and communities is another method that many of my clients have utilized to reconnect and build their networks.

3. Demonstrate your value.

Startups often require employees to perform multiple roles, so hiring managers look for more than just a qualified candidate. They seek individuals who can deliver additional value to the team and organization.

Instead of merely listing your qualifications on your resume and mentioning them during interviews, emphasize what sets you apart from other applicants. Communicate why they should hire you over other professionals seeking the same position, and how you're effectively conveying this to recruiters and hiring managers throughout your job search.

Is now the right time to work at a startup?

As a tech career coach, job seekers often ask me if now is an ideal time to join a startup or if they should prioritize a larger company. Many professionals once believed that startup life was primarily for bold risk-takers without family or personal responsibilities. However, the last few years have shown that even well-established companies can undergo significant layoffs. Furthermore, many tech startups have now begun to emphasize work-life balance and mental health.

So if you're looking for a tech job, it may be worth considering targeting a startup. You've got this!
