Enhance Collaborative Efforts among Universities in Lausitz - The University of Lausanne is forming collaborations.

Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg and Medical University of Lausitz-Carl Thiem Strengthen Cooperation

The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) and the Medical University of Lausitz-Carl Thiem have announced an expansion of their cooperation, focusing on joint research projects, societal impact initiatives, and teaching collaborations aimed at fostering the advancement of the Lausitz region.

The collaboration between the two institutions is rooted in their complementary profiles, with the Medical University of Lausitz-Carl Thiem specialising in medical education and research, and BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg excelling in engineering and technology.

One of the key initiatives of this partnership is the "Carbon Lab Factory Lausitz," a cross-state project involving Brandenburg and Saxony. This initiative covers the entire value chain from biomass raw material to carbon fiber production and technical component manufacturing in Germany. BTU, through its Institute of Lightweight Design and Value-added Management, collaborates with Fraunhofer IAP and TU Chemnitz to develop next-generation cellulose-based sustainable carbon fibers. These innovative fibers offer a balance between ecological sustainability and high mechanical, electrical, and thermal performance comparable to petroleum-based fibers.

These bio-based carbon fibers have potential applications in fuel cells and other high-tech domains, supporting the industrial scaling and regional economic transformation of Lausitz through innovation-driven development.

In addition to research collaborations, both universities are committed to societal and community initiatives. BTU recognises its responsibility towards students, employees, and local social developments, while the Medical University of Lausitz takes on a responsibility for the societal process in the region.

The universities' cooperation is also evident in BTU's participation in innovation competitions such as the Lausitz Dynamics fuel cell prototype project, demonstrating active student and faculty involvement in applied research with tangible societal and technological impact.

Eckhard Nagel, the board of healthcare at the Medical University of Lausitz, has emphasised a focus on societal challenges in the region. The Medical University of Lausitz was established to promote structural change in the face of the impending end of open-pit coal mining.

The cooperation between the two universities is open-ended and aims for the future. The universities are planning joint projects, specifically in health system research and digitalization of healthcare. The partner in this cooperation is the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg.

The cities involved in the cooperation are Lausitz and Cottbus. The agreement between the universities includes close integration in medical training. The promotion of young scientific talent is a significant part of this cooperation.

In summary, the collaboration between the Medical University of Lausitz-Carl Thiem and BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg is advancing through integrated research projects such as sustainable carbon fiber development within the Carbon Lab Factory Lausitz, alongside broader educational and social commitments aimed at fostering the Lausitz region’s structural and technological advancement.

  1. The universities' cooperation in health system research and digitalization of healthcare is a testament to their commitment towards implementing a comprehensive and progressive health policy within the Lausitz region, which aligns with the community policy focused on the region's development.
  2. Recognizing the connection between education-and-self-development, health-and-wellness, and science, the universities aim to promote the advancement of science in health and technology through joint projects, providing opportunities for science education and the development of young scientific talent in the Lausitz community.
