Master Gardeners are community educators, environmental stewards, and connectors of people and place. They share a passion for plants and people, and a commitment to making science accessible and actionable. The University of Minnesota offers the Master Gardener Volunteer Program, which is now accepting applications through October 1.

New volunteers begin with online training that covers core horticultural topics. Interns then complete a minimum of 50 volunteer hours in their first year, working alongside experienced Master Gardeners. Master Gardeners help communities address challenges such as invasive species, stormwater runoff, and pollinator decline. They adapt and build relationships within communities, encouraging lifelong learning and curiosity. The program continues to encourage and support community growth and development.
The Master Gardener Volunteer Program is flexible and supportive, welcoming volunteers from various backgrounds. In 2024, certified Master Gardener volunteers contributed over 195,000 hours of service and reached nearly 148,000 residents.
