Rising Star in the Music Industry: Madison Dorsett Paves the Way for Change
Madison Dorsett, a fourth-year music performance major at UCLA's Herb Alpert School of Music, is making waves in the music industry. In 2020, Dorsett and a schoolmate formed the school's first Undergraduate Student Advisory Board (2020-21), bridging communication between faculty and students, particularly in a remote setting.
Dorsett's proactive approach and entrepreneurial spirit caught the eye of Eileen L. Strempel, the inaugural dean of The Herb Alpert School of Music. Impressed by her initiatives, Strempel recommended Dorsett for a summer internship opportunity at Full Stop Management, a prestigious music management company that represents globally renowned clients such as Lizzo, Harry Styles, and Gwen Stefani.
At Full Stop Management, Dorsett oversees day-to-day scheduling and budgeting for various projects. Her internship provides her with an opportunity to expand her music industry knowledge and learn how to build, represent, and market artists. Dorsett is the only Black, Indigenous, Person of Color (BIPOC) within her cohort at Full Stop Management, finding it empowering to have a voice at the table.
In addition to her work at Full Stop Management, Dorsett is an intern with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Her passion for music extends beyond performance, as she is also completing a music industry minor.
Dorsett's dedication to the music industry is further demonstrated by her role as the vice president of operations for the Chromatic Brass Collective. This ensemble, known for innovative performances, aims to build a community for BIPOC female and gender non-conforming brass players from across the country. Dorsett aspires to establish a "new normal" in the music industry through the Chromatic Brass Collective, hoping it will provide a sense of belonging for BIPOC women in the music community.
Upon graduation in spring 2022, Dorsett plans to continue performing and focusing on her work at the non-profit she helped create, the Chromatic Brass Collective. Her journey serves as an inspiration to many, demonstrating that with determination and a proactive approach, one can make a significant impact in the music industry.
