UCLA Philharmonia's Path to Resuming Real-Time Concerts
UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Embraces Innovation and Inclusion in Music Education
The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is undergoing significant changes, with a primary focus on "reimagining curricula" and centering works by historically underrepresented composers. This shift is part of a broader commitment to diversity and innovation in music education and industry partnerships, as evidenced by recent collaborations such as the Universal Music Group scholarship established in 2025.
On October 30, 2021, the UCLA Philharmonia returned to the stage after more than a year and a half of remote work, marking a significant milestone in the school's journey. The concert was a celebration of discovery, innovation, doubt, persistence, improvisation, and last-minute heroics. Despite unusual rehearsal setups, variable coaching from instrumental faculty, and the efforts of support staff, the performance was a testament to music's resilience, strength, and the spirit of the faculty, staff, and students.
Brandon Zhou, a second-year Master's student and 2019 Atwater Kent Concerto Competition winner, took centre stage, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1. The performance also featured orchestral showpieces by Bartók and Debussy. A notable highlight was an excerpt from the opera "Lo Schiavo" (The Slave) by Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Gomes.
The school's strategic plan is led by Inaugural Dean Eileen Strempel. One of the initiatives that align with this strategy is Professor Neal Stulberg's special topics course, "Creating Inclusive Orchestra Audition Lists," which promotes collaboration among various school departments.
The concert took place at The UCLA Herb Albert School of Music, with precautions in place to adhere to LA County COVID protocols. Woodwinds and brass musicians had to rehearse with slitted masks, bell covers, and maintain six-foot spacing.
The UCLA Philharmonia's next performance will be on December 5, 2021. RSVP for the event to witness another exciting night of music and innovation at the school.
