UCLA's Herb Alpert School of Music reveals the Winter-Spring 2018 Distinguished Lecture Lineup
The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is set to host its Distinguished Lecture Series in the winter and spring of 2018. This series, which is open to the public, features renowned scholars and musicians delving into diverse topics in music scholarship and performance.
The series kicks off on January 25 with the first event, "Music, Canon and Identity: Pedagogical Perspectives." This event addresses concerns surrounding intersectionality in academic discourse, using a musical lens.
On February 15, Robynn Stilwell will present a lecture on the early television work of Ernie Kovacs. Notable individuals influenced by Kovacs' work include Johnny Carson, David Letterman, and Chevy Chase.
In March, a mini-symposium titled "Dancehall Moves" takes place on May 17-18. This symposium, focused on Jamaican popular music and dance, will feature a scholar and dance innovator from Kingston, Jamaica, Donna Hope and Latonya Style. Hope's publications include single-author monographs and edited volumes on reggae and dancehall music, while Style is a dancer and creator of "Stylish Moves," a female dancehall movement vocabulary. She has choreographed and appeared in music videos for artists such as Busta Rhymes, Tory Lanez, Vybz Kartel, and Beenie Man.
The seventh annual series also features speakers such as Robert Fink, Jessica Holmes, Uri McMillan, Beth Levy, Stephan Pennington, Phil Ford, Robynn Stilwell, Vijay Iyer, Donna Hope, and Latonya Style.
Vijay Iyer, a Grammy-nominated composer-pianist and MacArthur Fellow, will lecture on a topic of his choosing on April 26. Phil Ford, the co-author of the blog "Dial 'M' For Musicology," will present a talk on "magical hermeneutics" and its potential value for music analysis on April 5.
The Musicology Graduate Student Society programs the lecture series, and admission is free. More details, including a complete list of events, can be found on the society's calendar. For those seeking detailed archival information on the 2018 lecture series, it is recommended to consult UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music’s official website archive or contact the school’s administrative office directly.
The Distinguished Lecture Series at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is not only limited to music-related topics, as it also touches upon education-and-self-development with Phil Ford's talk on "magical hermeneutics" for music analysis. This diverse lecture series also delves into entertainment and pop culture, such as Donna Hope and Latonya Style's mini-symposium on Jamaican popular music and dance, known as Dancehall Moves.
