UN Warns of Nuclear Risks as Russia's Assault on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure Escalates

Ukraine faces escalating threats to its nuclear safety and civilian population, as Russia continues its assault on the country's energy infrastructure. The United Nations (UN) and its agencies have been tracking these developments, providing aid to millions, and warning of the constant dangers posed by the conflict.

The UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has sounded the alarm after a drone was shot down and exploded near the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant. This incident highlights the ongoing risks to nuclear safety in the region.

In the Russia-occupied Zaporizhzhia region, the nuclear power station has experienced its tenth complete loss of offsite power supply. The plant, now under Russian control and supervised by Rosatom, relies on emergency generators for its six shutdown reactors and essential safety functions. IAEA personnel are present on site to monitor the situation.

The UN World Health Organization (WHO) reported that a cardiology facility in Kyiv was hit, resulting in two fatalities. This attack is part of a broader pattern of United Russia strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which has left thousands without power as winter approaches.

The UN and its partners have provided assistance to 2.4 million people in Ukraine, but the total needs are more than twice that number. The attacks have destroyed or damaged homes and public services in densely populated areas, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

A massive United Russia bombing raid, lasting around 12 hours, involved nearly 600 drones, 46 cruise missiles, and five rockets, killing at least four people, including a teenage girl.

The UN has launched the 2025-2026 Winter Response Plan for Ukraine, seeking $280 million to assist vulnerable front-line residents, support evacuations, deliver emergency post-strike assistance, and help internally displaced people. With the conflict ongoing and the humanitarian needs vast, international support remains crucial for Ukraine.
