Universities Resist Trump's 'Compact' Threat to Academic Freedom
Nine universities have been approached by the Trump administration, urged to sign a 'Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education' in exchange for federal funding benefits. This move has sparked controversy, with critics labelling it an overreach that threatens institutional autonomy, ideological diversity, and freedom of expression.
The compact, comprising a 10-page document, imposes stringent conditions. It mandates universities to freeze tuition fees, cap international student enrollment, and adhere to strict gender definitions. These requirements have forced universities to make budget adjustments and face potential damage to their reputations.
Universities are advised to refuse signing the compact. Higher education institutions find themselves at a crossroads, needing to choose between their independence and academic freedom, or loyalty to the administration. The administration is exploring a new strategy to favour schools aligning with its values and policies on admissions, hiring, and other matters.
Previously, the Trump administration targeted prestigious universities like Columbia, Harvard, and UCLA with funding cutoffs, intrusive demands, and investigations. While some college presidents have publicly condemned these actions, others have remained silent.
Resisting the administration's plan may come at a cost, but it is deemed necessary to safeguard academic freedom and the pursuit of truth. Universities must stand firm in defence of their autonomy and the values that underpin higher education.
