University of West Georgia Hoax Report Determined to be False
Following a report of a man with a gun near the Ingram Library at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, Georgia, on Friday evening, local law enforcement authorities and the FBI Atlanta have since confirmed that the incident was a hoax.
The university issued a statement on Saturday, strongly condemning hoax reports and swatting attempts, stating that such actions cause unnecessary fear and divert critical emergency resources. The school also emphasised that making false reports about such incidents is considered a dangerous and unlawful act.
The reported incident at the University of West Georgia was not the first incident of a hoax threat targeting an educational institution in Georgia. Reports of shooters at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta and the University of Georgia in Athens were also determined to be fake.
Just after 10:30 p.m., police announced an all-clear at the University of West Georgia. The university did not provide details on how the anonymous tip feature of the LiveSafe app will be used in the investigation.
The university asks anyone with information to call the school's police department at 678-839-6000. The FBI Atlanta is currently investigating hoax threats targeting colleges and other institutions in Georgia.
The school stated that false reports like the one at the University of West Georgia are not harmless pranks. The university has not announced any changes to its safety protocols following this incident. It also has not issued any specific statement regarding the similarity of this incident to previous ones in Georgia.
The person involved with the allegedly armed man at the University of West Georgia was investigated by local law enforcement authorities. The university has not provided information on whether the reports at Clark Atlanta University and the University of Georgia were also investigated by the FBI Atlanta.
The university did not specify how the latest report was determined to be a hoax. However, it is clear that the safety and well-being of the students, faculty, and staff remain a top priority for the University of West Georgia.
