Jialong Shen to Join Wilson College of Textiles as Assistant Professor

Jialong Shen, a renowned researcher in the field of textile engineering and polymer science, is set to join the Wilson College of Textiles as an assistant professor. Shen has served as an assistant research professor in Professor Sonja Salmon's lab since 2023, and his transition to the academic role marks an exciting new chapter in his career.

Shen completed his master's degree in textile engineering and a Ph.D. in fiber and polymer science at the Wilson College. His postdoctoral work saw him focusing on developing fibrous wound dressing materials in a biomedical application. After transitioning to his postdoctoral role, his research began to focus on polymer science applications.

Shen's current research focuses on sustainable polymer applications, a shift that aligns with his commitment to promoting sustainability in textile production. He is working on synthesizing sustainable polymers and producing bio-electrocatalysis, which aims to create a more energy-efficient way to manage carbon emissions from industrial sources than traditional methods.

In collaboration with Dr. Sonja Salmon, Shen has developed a carbon capture system using enzyme-based CO capture and bio-catalytic textiles. This innovative system is designed to capture carbon more efficiently, contributing to the fight against climate change.

As an educator, Shen values the growth-oriented atmosphere at the Wilson College of Textiles and desires to give back to the institution. This fall, he will be teaching the senior-level textile engineering course TE 463 Polymer Engineering. In this course, students will learn how to engineer polymers, understand their structure-property relationships, and select the correct polymer for the correct product.

Shen's teaching philosophy is centered around serving and empowering students. He aims to focus his teaching efforts on helping students design future sustainable textile products. In addition, he plans to set up a sustainable polymer research lab, where students can continue to explore sustainable polymer applications under his guidance.

Professor Jennifer L. DuBois, who will oversee Shen's work, expressed her excitement about his appointment. "Jialong's research combines biotechnology with textile technology for carbon capture applications," she said. "His expertise and dedication to sustainability make him a valuable addition to our faculty."

Shen expressed his excitement about connecting his many years of research with teaching as an assistant professor for the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science. "I am thrilled to join the Wilson College of Textiles," he said. "I look forward to working with students and contributing to the college's mission of preparing the next generation of textile professionals."
