Women-Led Cooperatives Drive Rural Development in the Philippines

The Foundation for a Sustainable Society, Inc. (FSSI) continues its commitment to empowering rural communities in the Philippines. Two women-led cooperatives, Caviteño Isabelino Multi-Purpose Cooperative (CAISA-MPC) and Lourdes Multi-Purpose Cooperative, have been recognised for their impact on rural development.

FSSI invests in enterprises that create sustainable livelihoods and community-centered innovation. It remains dedicated to strengthening these efforts by providing accessible capital, technology upgrades, and continuous capacity-building. The organisation aims to ensure that women-led enterprises continue to lead the way in rural transformation.

CAISA-MPC, led by Maria Victoria Anahaw, has expanded into pineapple processing, rice milling, agri-machinery rentals, and sustainable farming practices with FSSI's support. Lourdes MPC, managed by Jesrryl Maye Obispo Agnas, operates an FSSI-funded agri-supply store offering affordable farm inputs and financial services. These cooperatives are shifting gender norms in agriculture by demonstrating the effectiveness of women-led, inclusive, community-based leadership. They were recognised at the 3BL Awards, launched by FSSI during its 30th anniversary to celebrate social enterprises embodying people, planet, and profit values.

The recognition of CAISA-MPC and Lourdes MPC highlights the success of FSSI's approach in supporting rural development. Despite 25.7% of the rural population in the Philippines living in poverty, including many farmers and fisherfolk, these cooperatives show that women-led enterprises can drive positive change. FSSI remains committed to strengthening these efforts and empowering more communities.
