Young Office hails the inaugural day of involvement as a success
In a bid to foster open dialogue and create participation opportunities beyond traditional help plan meetings, the Duisburg Youth Welfare Office organised a participation day as a pilot project. Over 48 children and young people aged 12 to 21 gathered at Duisburg town hall to take part in the event.
The day was meticulously prepared by the youth welfare office, in collaboration with representatives from 14 free providers in the city. Twenty pedagogical experts accompanied the young participants, ensuring a supportive environment throughout the event.
The goal of the participation day was to break down barriers and enable an exchange at eye level. The young people were given the opportunity to speak openly about what they think, with the youth welfare office listening intently.
The day was filled with workshops, each focusing on a different aspect of youth welfare. The workshops covered children's rights, help planning, and feedback and suggestion opportunities within the Duisburg youth welfare office.
One participant praised the event, saying, "It was really cool that the youth welfare office did something like this." The young people formed new contacts during the event, and the day offered space for encounters over pizza and drinks.
Philipp Thelen, the acting head of the youth welfare office, expressed two wishes to the young people: to speak honestly and to realise that their opinion counts. He drew a positive conclusion from the event, stating that both sides learned from each other and agreed to hold another participation day in 2026.
